Principal's Corner

August/September 2017

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school! I hope you enjoyed the summer and are ready to begin another great year. I want to extend a special welcome to all of our new Battle families. Hopefully, you will see that Battle Academy is such a special place of learning. Our students will continue to engage in a rigorous curriculum based on Tennessee’s higher academic standards. These standards demonstrate the commitment to ensuring our students are more prepared for college and today’s workforce.

I am excited about the work we will accomplish together to provide high quality learning experiences for every child. This school year, we will focus on improving our reading, writing and achievement gaps to meet target goals. The following is planned in efforts to maximize learning and raise student achievement:

Project Coach-This model requires certified educators to receive a minimum of 4 mini-observations by an administrator each school year. In addition, teachers will discuss their overall performance with administration throughout the school year. Value of the model- teachers refine their classroom practice; take ownership for continuous professional growth; end result - student achievement grows.

Instructional Support- Melanie Atchley will provide support, research based strategies and best practices based on her specialized training in the area of literacy. Ms. Atchley has received training through district professional development and national consultants. She is a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. Cindy Kean will provide the same support and services in the area of mathematics. Ms. Kean has received specialized training at the district level and through the Teachers Development Group. This school year, Ms. Kean is receiving additional professional development with the Public Education Foundation (PEF) Leadership Fellows Program. Katie Hetrick, Instructional Facilitator provides classroom support with best practices in behavior and academics. Ms. Hetrick has a wide range of knowledge and experience.  She has received professional development with PEF Leadership and STEM Fellows programs. She is currently a PEF Policy Fellow.  The instructional coaches along with teacher leaders in our school attend district professional development throughout the school year to lead best practices in education at Battle Academy.

Student Teachers and Clinical Residents- This school year we are fortunate to partner with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and Project Inspire a Public Education Foundation Program. Lee University is the partner University for the Project Inspire program. The Project Inspire and UTC residents will be part of the Battle family for the full school year. In addition, Covenant College will partner with Battle for field placements in intermediate grades.

School Wide Positive Behavior Support- STAR- Self Control, Teamwork, Always Prepared and Respect. SWPBS increases student learning by providing clear expectations for behavior to minimize disruptions and reduce office referrals. Due to the success of this program, we will continue to develop and improve aspects of this initiative.  The Battle Academy staff engaged in learning activities to enhance our knowledge and skills to meet the behavioral, social and emotional needs of our students.

Promote a positive climate and culture through monthly assemblies, teacher incentives and school wide events. We continue to receive positive feedback about coming together once a month to celebrate the wonderful things happening at our school. Our annual Battle Banzai will take place September 16th. We will schedule activities for Spirit Week in January and Arts Experience in May to continue building a positive environment and love for all things Battle.

Staff Development & Parent Classes- Teachers will attend various training, conferences and workshops to present current information and up to date research based on student needs.  Parents will have the opportunity to attend activities to meet your needs in supporting your child’s education and growth.

One of the ways you can help us is by communicating with your child’s teacher about activities that will reinforce learning and skills at home. On a regular basis, talk with your child about the importance of good character and doing their best academically.

Again this year, we will work to maintain a 95% daily attendance rate and decrease the number of students who are tardy on a regular basis.  We depend strongly on you to help us in this endeavor

In closing, please communicate with Battle’s PTA to build relationships and enhance parent involvement. PTA meetings and Parent Nights are ways to address your individual or group questions and concerns.  However, don’t hesitate to stop by, call or make an appointment whenever you have questions or concerns.  If we work together, I believe we can continue to build on our strengths and enhance areas in need of improvement. I look forward to working with you and the teachers to make this school an exciting, welcoming and safe place for students!
